When ion pumps develop field
emission leakage currents due to build up of deposits with microscopically
small, sharp points, the leakage current can be reduced or eliminated by the
technique known as “hi-potting”. This involves application of high voltage,
typically 10-15 KV, either DC or AC, to the ion pump high voltage
feedthrough.
